Library Cards

Anyone 18 years of age or older may register for a library card.  Your membership must be taken out at the Circulation Desk.  One piece of identification with a permanant address is required.  A child must have the signature of a legal guardian to obtain a membership.  There is no fee for library membership.

School Memberships

School librarians and/or teachers should search their own collections first. If their own collections do not prove adequate, or if they need supplementary information, they are then welcome to select books from the Public Library.

It is the responsibility of the school librarian and/or teacher(s) to come to the public library and judge which materials are appropriate in content and reading level. Reference staff are available to assist and provide general guidance for the school librarian and/or teacher in locating appropriate materials by showing them how to use the library and the computer catalogue.

If assistance is required, reference staff will check a maximum of three author, title or subject requests in our catalogue, and then it is the responsibility of the school librarian and/or teacher(s) if more material is required.

Schools are permitted have a maximum of ten items on hold at any given time. Once the items on hold have been picked up by the school, additional items may then be placed on hold.

Loan Procedures

Each school will be given three (3) library cards, which must have the signature of individuals with signing authority within the school (ie. Principal, Vice-Principal).  The library card(s) must be presented at the time of check-out; books will not be checked out without a card.

As we have a commitment to serve the community of Fort McMurray at large, we reserve the right to limit the number of books taken on any one subject.  The limit is five(5) per subject.  The total number of books allowed to schools is fifty(50).

Books may be checked out immediately.  The loan period is three weeks.  Books may be renewed for an additional three weeks. Books may be renewed once, giving an additional 3 week loan period provided another patron has not placed a hold on that item.  Books may be renewed over the phone.  

Extended Use Fees are $.20 per day per item. Privileges will be suspended if Extended Use Fees amount to $5.00 or more.  The school will be responsible for lost and/or damaged books and related charges as stated in the Fort McMurray Public Library By-laws.
